Fundamentals of Naturopathic Medicine?
The practice of Naturopathy is
deeply rooted in six fundamental principles:
The Healing Power of
Nature
The body has an inherent ability to establish, maintain, and
restore health. The doctor's role is to help facilitate and augment
this healing process by identifying and removing the obstacles to
recovery and health.
Identify and Treat the
Cause
Symptoms are an expression of the body's attempt to heal, and are
not the cause of the disease. Naturopathic doctors address the
underlying causes of the disease rather than the symptoms,
evaluating potential causes on many levels, including: mental,
emotional, physical, and spiritual planes.
Treat the Whole
Person
Naturopathic doctors treat the whole person by taking into
consideration that disease is a condition involving many factors,
including; physical, mental, emotional, genetic, social, and
environmental factors. When all aspects of the individual are in
harmony healing can occur.
The Physician as
Teacher
The doctor's role is to educate and encourage patients to take
responsibility for their health. In doing so the goal
is to empower the patient to make healthy changes.
First, Do No
Harm
Symptoms, are an expression of the body's attempt to heal itself.
The doctor's actions will support this healing process and not
suppress it.
Prevention
Prevention is the ultimate goal of Naturopathic medicine. This is
accomplished through education and promotion of healthy lifestyle
habits. The doctor will assess risk factors and hereditary
susceptibility to disease and make appropriate interventions to
avoid future harm and risk to the patient. It is the responsibility
of the doctor and patient to create a healthier environment to live
in.
